The use of doping is today considered a growing public health issue. For some people it can be tempting to get their ideal body in an easier and faster way. This report summarises the research currently available in the social sciences on doping in gym and fitness culture.
Gym culture is no longer the subcultural and masculine-coded phenomenon it was in the 1970s. Today, it is a global multi-million dollar industry with a strong focus on the body and what it looks like. Despite the idealisation of healthy lifestyles, doping substances are being used.
Research shows that the use of doping leads to serious physical and mental health problems such as increased irritability, depression, liver damage and hair loss.
In the Research Brief #13, Fitness Doping and Gym Culture, the authors summarise the research currently available in the social sciences on doping in gym and fitness culture, while also demonstrating knowledge gaps in this field.
